Snow in the South

Obviously, snow is very rare in Florida. However, occasionally there is measurable snowfall in North Florida. Two events stand out. The first one was on February 12, 1958, when Tallahassee got 2.8 inches, the largest amount of snow ever measured here. The most popular photos from that events are from the Florida State University campus, where students were sledding down some small hills on plastic garbage bags, palm tree branches and unidentifiable pieces of metal or plastic. The second largest amount of snow, 1.9 inches, fell overnight from January 21 to 22, 2025. That morning we walked around midtown and downtown and saw many cars struggling to drive up some hills. Most notably, we saw many kids and teenager using improvised sleds to ride down hills, as in the photos from 1958. This time we could identify the homemade sleds in person: Baking sheets, plastic bags, skateboards with trucks removed, wakeboards and surfboards! I think we saw one actual, old-school, wood sled. Perhaps a transplant from the Midwest brought it down South many decades ago and stored it in the attic or garage. It is questionable, though, if it will ever get used again here in the future.
